Christine Engels

Board Member

Christine is a conservation biologist whose lifelong love for the golden lion tamarins began while researching their behavior and vocalizations at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and the Department of Zoological Research. She went on to work at the World Wildlife Fund to help environmental practitioners influence people’s behaviors and attitudes towards nature protection in Brazil and throughout Latin America. Later she went back to school to pursue a masters at the University of Florida and to further research positive ways to influence people to protect the environment. For her masters she evaluated the education program of the Golden Lion Tamarin Association in Brazil. After completing her graduate work, Christine went to the American Museum of Natural History to design educational resources with Bahamian teachers and to lead the evaluation of the Network of Conservation Educators and Practitioners. When she returned to Gainesville, Christine joined the University of Florida as the coordinator for the Florida Climate Institute and later as a contributing evaluator for the Climate Change to Climate Variability Extension program. Currently, she enjoys helping protect the tamarins and their habitat by creating environmental education opportunities for zoos and schools, developing fundraising campaigns and working as the secretary for the Save the Golden Lion Tamarin’s Board of Directors. She and her husband John live in Gainesville, where they like to hike and visit the beautiful springs with their two children, Beatriz and Luke.
